Prevent Task Run or End

Verified with Windows 11 25H2 — updated on July 10, 2026

Windows 11 25H2

Supported on: Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 only

Path in the GPO console

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Task Scheduler

Description

Prevents users from starting and stopping tasks manually. This setting removes the Run and End Task items from the context menu that appears when you right-click a task. As a result, users cannot start tasks manually or force tasks to end before they are finished. Note: This setting appears in the Computer Configuration and User Configuration folders. If both settings are configured, the setting in Computer Configuration takes precedence over the setting in User Configuration.

Registry

HKLM Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Task Scheduler5.0

Value name: Execution

BETA

Configure the state, scope and options, then generate .reg, PowerShell, Intune and SCCM outputs — or add the setting to a multi-setting collection.

These exports write the registry — this is not a managed GPO.
