Autorise les utilisateurs à exécuter un programme 16 bits dans un processus VDM (Virtual DOS Machine) dédié (non partagé). Dans Windows 2000 Professionnel et Windows XP Professionnel, tous les programmes DOS et 16 bits s’exécutent dans le programme machine DOS virtuelle. VDM émule un environnement 16 bit, en utilisant les DLL nécessaires aux programmes 16 bits. Par défaut, tous les programmes 16 bits s’exécutent en tant que threads dans un processus VDM partagé unique. En tant que tels, ils partagent l’espace mémoire alloué au processus VDM et ne peuvent pas s’exécuter simultanément. Si vous activez ce paramètre, une case à cocher est ajoutée à la boîte de dialogue Exécuter, offrant aux utilisateurs l’option d’exécuter un programme 16 bits dans son propre processus NTVDM dédié. La case à cocher supplémentaire n’est activée que si les utilisateurs entrent un nom de programme 16 bits dans la boîte de dialogue Exécuter.
